The Problem
On October 28th 2014 the Royal Marines celebrated their 350th anniversary. To commemorate this the Navy wished to produce a special logo that could be used to tie together all the celebratory events taking place throughout the year.
The chosen logo had to be iconic, simple and versatile for a wide range of uses, but it also needed to co-exist with the well established branding the Royal Navy and Royal Marines already had in place.
I was asked to take the design lead and, after my initial logo proposal was accepted, liaised with key stakeholders across the Royal Navy to produce the finished product.
The Solution
The final logo ties the Royal Marines’ proud history with its current-day role. The two Marines stand back-to-back; reflecting the special bond between all Marines past and present. Whilst the subtle Commando Dagger between them reflects the Royal Marines’ role as the UK’s specialist commando force.
The logo was launched at the tail-end of 2013, and was a prominent feature at a large number of special events held throughout the anniversary year.
[Andrew] developed his initial ideas to meet the needs of the various units, charities and partners associated with the Royal Marines as well as working within in the constraints of Royal Navy branding guidelines. He made alterations and amendments as requested often at extremely short notice for presentations and briefs. He has developed a modern, relevant, simple design[…]to reflect the ethos, identity and history of the Royal Marines, which will be seen by a wide audience during the anniversary year. All impressive and important stuff.
